Testimony – Rob Hines

Tuesday, December 23rd, 2008

This is my testimony. There is one God. The Bible is God Breathed, every word of it is true and it is God’s message to us about Himself. He has revealed Himself to mankind through the Scriptures in three persons, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. God created the cosmos, nothing has been or ever will be created outside of Him. God created man, in His image, and man once communed with God freely. Man broke that communion by disobeying God, and since then, every human ever born was born out of communion with God.

Keeping in Touch is So Hard to Do

Tuesday, December 23rd, 2008

image You would think it to be a rather simple thing, an email here, a phone call there, and perhaps a visit. Unfortunately, we find it difficult to maintain the lines of communication that keep us all in touch. Thankfully, there is a slew of technological options to assist in this.

For example, we have Twitter for micro-blogging (or mini-updates) throughout a given day, then we have the H57 Blog for more structured updates. The H57 Photo Album attempts to capture and archive those significant (and perhaps not so significant) events that occur in our lives. We can all be found on Facebook in some form or another, and this provides for much more group interaction on topics. Finally, we have the email, which has been our primary method of dispersing information for the past year or so.image

The Roman Road: A Well-Engineered Path to Salvation

Monday, December 22nd, 2008

The Roman Road is a collection of verses in Paul’s Epistle to the Romans that offers a clear and structured path to Jesus Christ. Although many people believe they will go to heaven because they have lived a good life, done charity work, been baptized as a child, attended church, or treated others fairly, the Bible declares that none of us can live up to God’s standards of righteousness. Therefore, we need a road to God that doesn’t rely on anything we do, but rather, relies on the gift of His grace alone.

imageYet another family favorite!

I can typically make this in the afternoon, just get started on them at lunch and have fresh rolls for dinner!

They are also very easy.

Gingerbread

Monday, December 22nd, 2008

imageJacob “Cobbs” Bishop was over on Saturday to do some Christmas baking with us. We decided to make Gingerbread, and I determined that I would begin to put my favorite recipes on the website. This serves two purposes, one – I can get back to my recipes easily from anywhere and two – other folks can peak at the recipes that our family most enjoys.

You will want to note that this isn’t a recipe for Gingerbread Cookies – we really are making bread. The final result will look like something between a cake and brownie – if you did it right!

Happy Anniversary – 2008 Year in Review

Wednesday, December 17th, 2008

One year ago, today (Dec 17th), our family of four exploded into a family of seven. In one fell swoop, we added three additional young ones to the fold.

  • I became a father of five
  • Tracey became a mother of five
  • Samantha suddenly had two younger sisters and brothers
  • Bethany suddenly had two younger sisters and brothers
  • The F150 turned into an E350
  • All the bedrooms were populated
  • The brief moment of more toilets than necessary returned to dreamland

LiveWriter For The Win!!

Wednesday, December 10th, 2008

image This tool is awesome! Well, for me anyway!

As anyone who is familiar with the Hines57 sites will realize, we recently made a massive change to not only the look and feel, but also the underlying engine(s) and hosting. Part of this change was moving to WordPress for this blog.

I enjoy writing, and blogging comes somewhat natural to me, but the niceties of MS Office have ruined me. That is, I like cut and paste, I want images in my content and I want them in a certain place, the whitespace needs to make me happy.

Typically, this is somewhat difficult to do given a web interface, a text box, the need to upload images separately – yada, yada, yada. Enter Windows Live Writer.

First, I Googled “offline blog editor” and quickly realized that there were two major players, BlogDesk and Windows LiveWriter. Then I thought, “Hey, I need this to work with WordPress!” I went back and threw WordPress into the search, and was surprised to see that Windows Live Writer continued to come up! Having read about Windows Live Writer earlier this summer, I decided I’d go check it out.

How Beer Drinkers Might View Tax Cuts

Tuesday, December 9th, 2008

Tommy found this on the internet and forwarded it to me … I thought it was cute and I’m sharing it with you! See how I keep giving?

Suppose that every day, ten men go out for beer and the bill for all ten comes to $100. If they paid their bill the way we pay our taxes, it would go something like this:

1. The first four men (the poorest) would pay nothing.
2. The fifth would pay $1.
3. The sixth would pay $3.
4. The seventh would pay $7.
5. The eighth would pay $12.
6. The ninth would pay $18.
7. The tenth man (the richest) would pay $59.

So, that’s what they decided to do.

The ten men drank in the bar every day and seemed quite happy with the arrangement, until one day, the owner threw them a curve. ‘Since you are all such good customers,’ he said, ‘I’m going to reduce the cost of your daily beers by $20.

Drinks for the ten now cost just $80.’

The group still wanted to pay their bill the way we pay our taxes so the first four men were unaffected. They would still drink for free. But what about the other six men – the paying customers? How could they divide the $20 windfall so that everyone would get his ‘fair share?’

They realized that $20 divided by six is $3.33. But if they subtracted that from everybody’s share, then the fifth man and the sixth man would each end up being paid to drink his beer. So, the bar owner suggested that it would be fair to reduce each man’s bill by roughly the same amount, and he proceeded to work out the amounts each should pay.

And so:

1. The fifth man, like the first four, now paid nothing (100% savings).
2. The sixth now paid $2 instead of $3 (33%savings).
3. The seventh now pay $5 instead of $7 (28%savings).
4. The eighth now paid $9 instead of $12 (25% savings).
5. The ninth now paid $14 instead of $18 (22% savings).
6. The tenth now paid $49 instead of $59 (16% savings).

Each of the six was better off than before and the first four continued to drink for free, but once outside the restaurant, the men began to compare their savings. “I only got a dollar out of the $20,” declared the sixth man. He pointed to the tenth man, “but he got $10!” “Yeah, that’s right,”exclaimed the fifth man. “I only saved a dollar, too. It’s unfair that he got TEN times more than I!”

“That’s true!!” shouted the seventh man. “Why should he get $10 back when I got only two ? The wealthy get all the breaks!”

“Wait a minute,” yelled the first four men in unison. “We didn’t get anything at all. The system exploits the poor!”

The nine men surrounded the tenth and beat him up.

The next night the tenth man didn’t show up for drinks, so the nine sat down and had beers without him. But when it came time to pay the bill, they discovered something very important….they didn’t have enough money between all of them for even half of the bill!

And that, boys and girls, journalists and college professors, is how our tax system works. The people who pay the highest taxes get the most benefit from a tax reduction. Tax them too much, attack them for being wealthy, and they just may not show up anymore. In fact, they might start drinking overseas where the atmosphere is somewhat friendlier.
