With hurricanes, tornados, fires out of control, mud slides, flooding, severe thunderstorms tearing up the country from one end to another, and with the threat of bird flu and terrorist attacks, are we sure this is a good time to take God out of the Pledge of Allegiance? – Jay Leno

Temporal Loops

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

if – it creates a condition, precedes a conditional statement; however, the master can do far more with an if statement.

Some Project Manager says, “Hey! We need a blafgartfee document! Bubba, could you get that done for us?

To which Bubba responds, “I got no idea what that looks like. If you send me an example or a template, I’ll get it done.”

See, the creation of a condition … “you must send me an example or template” before Bubba will do anything.

Three weeks later, some some Project Managers says, “Hey, I have you down to provide the blafgartfee document by EOD today. How is it going?

Bubba, “Seriously? Did I really miss the communication from you with the example or template?

Them, “Oh. Let me see if I can find that for you now.”

Three weeks later ……

Apparently, Bubba if statements can create a Temporal Loop!

Those Who Would Raise Children

Monday, January 18th, 2010

Many years back, in the early 1990’s, Tracey and I got married. We were young and with our lives before us we spent many hours dreaming what our lives would ultimately be. I was given to poetry and had recently read Laughter in the Walls by Bob Benson. It captured so well our own particular dreams at the time that I copied it down and made some ever so slight changes to accommodate our own lives.

I utterly forgot about, but Tracey hid it away safely in an album with other keepsakes, and this morning my daughter Samantha found it, read it, and brought it to my attention. I am amazed to realize, that our dreams have come true in a quiet manner that we never suspected. The sudden confrontation of this document from so many years ago and our current situation is an amazing thing. Allow me to share with you the dreams of a 21 year old man, newly married.

I will pass a lot of houses on my way home -
   some pretty,
   some expensive,
   some inviting -
But my heart will always skip a beat when I turn down
the road and see my house nestled against the hill.

I guess I’ll be especially proud of the house, and way it looks;
because I’ll draw the plans myself.

It’ll start out large enough for us, I’ll have a study -
Perhaps two teenage boy’s will live in there.

And it’ll have a guest room -
with my daughter and her dolls as permanent guests.

It will have a small room for Tracey, maybe her sewing room …
and perhaps the two toddlers swinging on the Dutch doors will claim it as
  their own.

So right now, it might not look as if I’m much of an architect.
But it will get larger … one by one they will
  go away
To work – to college – to service – to their own houses -
and there will be room for just the two of us.

But it won’t be empty – every corner, every room, every nick in the
coffee table will be crowded with memories.

Memories of picnics, parties, Christmases, bedside vigils, summers, fires, winters,
going barefoot, leaving for vacation, dogs, conversations, black eyes, graduations,
first dates, ball games, arguments, washing dishes, bicycles, boat rides, getting
home from vacation, meals, rabbits, and thousand other things that fill
the lives of those who would raise children.

AND my love and I will sit quietly by the fire and listen to the laughter in the walls.

My son Ethan is playing with the dog in the room behind me, Abby (in her room) is sorting her doll house, Collin (in his room) is engaged in a game of Lego’s, Sam is being self conscious about her new braces, Bethany is being excited about hers. Jacob and Corey are having a virtual fight of epic proportions with heroic avatars, and Tyler cheers them on, heedless of who wins while Nicole reads a book for school. My wife is relaxing with a book as well. I am in awe of how my God has so blessed me as I sit here and watch the walls filling up with laughter.

Updated Doctrinal Triage Part 1

Monday, January 18th, 2010

Last week I posted Approach to Doctrinal Triage – Part 1 and that generated some exceedingly good conversations with a number of people. There were some excellent questions asked that I had not properly addressed, and I so I updated the post to address these questions. Here’s a quick list of things added/changed:

New Section Why are We Talking About It? – I added this section because a number of people asked why.
Removed Priorities Hierarchical Diagram – The Venn Diagram communicates far more.
Added Priorities Venn Diagram – Further clarification, I believe the VENN diagram ultimately does a far better job of presenting the association between the classifications.
Added a Class A Example.
Added a Class B Example.
Added a Class C Example.

Part 2 is yet to come, it seems reasonable that I ensure this is nailed down well before getting ahead of myself. Thanks for all the feedback!

Approach to Doctrinal Triage – Part 1

Sunday, January 10th, 2010

Overview

Bubba tends to be of an extremely analytical and logical nature; as such, he is drawn to systems, frameworks, and workflows in understanding and visualizing concepts. While most everyone appreciates a diagram or picture to help them understand a concept, there aren’t as many (though you are likely one if you are reading this) who are truly attracted to a systematic approach of frameworks and workflows. A long way of saying that this might not be for you, but I find it helps me towards greater clarity in analysis and understanding.

First, we will acquire a framework for understanding doctrine. Back in 2003 (or was 2004?), Randy Tomassi was teaching a Sunday School class at Christ the King church in Batavia, and introduced me to a three tiered classification of Doctrine, which I immediately fell in love with. Recently, my good friend Nathan Chapman (worship leader at The Exodus Church in Belmont) pointed me towards Al Mohlers article “A Call for Theological Triage and Christian Maturity” and asked me what I thought of it. In short, I love it and agree wholeheartedly. The longer version is that there is so much more.

Mind spinning over the past couple of days, I have struggled to get my thoughts on the matter in some semblance of order and cohesiveness that can be clearly articulated to others. There are so many nuances and opportunities to misspeak or be misunderstood that one friend even suggested that perhaps it isn’t worth pursuing. However, for my own peace of mind I need to articulate this, and I pray that it will be useful to others as well.
