Bubba’s Update

Those Who Would Raise Children

Many years back, in the early 1990’s, Tracey and I got married. We were young and with our lives before us we spent many hours dreaming what our lives would ultimately be. I was given to poetry and had recently read Laughter in the Walls by Bob Benson. It captured so well our own particular dreams at the time that I copied it down and made some ever so slight changes to accommodate our own lives. I utterly forgot about, but Tracey hid it away safely in an album with other keepsakes, and this morning my daughter Samantha found it, read it, and brought it to my attention. I am amazed to realize,...

Happy Birthday Me!

Thursday, January 7th 2010, I will be celebrating my 39th birthday. I like to celebrate anything and everything and in particular I want to celebrate the fact that, regardless of what we all thought would happen, I’ve survived this long! To that end, we will be having a bit of a party on Thursday night, here at the house (Contact me if you need directions)! If you can’t make it to Lowell, NC … feel free to Twitter, Facebook, or call in to join the fun. People should eat healthy before they arrive, as we intend to have only the most sugary snacks and the sweetest of nectar for your enjoyment!...

Campfire(s) With Bubba

We have officially started up the Friday Night campfires again! For those who haven’t kept track, we called it off over the summer, what with everyone traveling and quite honestly, Tracey and I wanted a bit of a break. However, we are now back into full swing and the attendance appears to increase each week. The whole thing started when we moved into the house almost three years ago, I wanted to combine my love of Theological and Philosophical discourse with my love of sitting around a fire, and so I proceeded to invite folks to come out to the house on Friday nights to participate in said...

The Story Teller

I’ve been told, on occasion, that I am a relatively good story teller. There’s no doubt I have been blessed with the Gift of Gab; whenever the opportunity arises, I tend to have story to tell that in some way, shape, or fashion fits the situation. It has been suggested that I document these stories and perhaps even write a book. I’m not sure that I am in the book writing class of story tellers; however, I reckon I can blog my stories as well as anyone and it honestly doesn’t feel quite as pretentious. In attempting to get some momentum behind this endeavor, I find myself struggling a bit to fire...

My Drug

A friend mentioned being unhappy in Chicago and I (obviously) suggested the he move to North Carolina. Another friend advised me to “stop pushing my new drug” and I flippantly stated that pushing it is half of enjoying it. The exchange and wordplay has stuck with me for a while now and I haven’t been able to shake the analogy. It would be unfair to give North Carolina all of the credit, although it tends to get a lot of focus. In reality, there is a “perfect storm” of paradigms that have converged in North Carolina, of which this great state is one. So then, the question to be answered...

Who Can’t Cook?

When Tracey and I married back in 1991, it didn’t take me long to come to the conclusion that she can’t cook. I mean, she’s a third generation German raised by Italians; and while you might expect some good cooking to come out of that, Macaroni and Cheese is her specialty – six meals out of seven. I cook the seventh meal. Tracey’s mom works for Kraft, and Tracey loves Kraft Macaroni and Cheese – so you can see how we arrived at this situation. Perhaps I’m being a wee bit unfair here; however, for the first seven years of our marriage I only experienced my wife  boiling water,...

Deer Season

If you research the following story on the internet, you will find many say that it is redneck legend (that’s like an urban legend but rednecks don’t live in urbania) – however, I happen to be friends with the fellow that wrote this! He posted it on a blog a few years back and it’s just grown from there.

Why Hate January 8

Hate is perhaps too strong a word, yet dislike doesn’t quite capture the feeling either, let us go with hate. For the last thirty some odd years, January 8 has continued to be the single most depressing day of the year. It’s the day that demonstrates the past year wasn’t the one, and just maybe, perhaps, next year will be. However, statistical analysis of the previous thirty years demonstrates that is will not be and really, why continue hoping that it will be? You are wondering what I’m talking about, right? “Will be what?” is on the tips of your lips. Unless, of course, you have...

The Obligatory List

Will started this whole thing off by putting together one of his lists, and then asking his friends to do the same. Tommy put together a list as well, and I began to feel the compulsion to follow along. I’m not really certain how this will turn out, and I don’t even know if the list is to be “ranked” or simply an unordered list of “things”. I’ve decided to go with an unordered list of 25 things that you may or may not already know about me, but I feel might possibly be noteworthy.
